The route for the 2014 World Aid Walk

The 2014 Guernsey’s World Aid Walk will start at 9 a.m. on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May in Market Square. Walkers should try and obtain their sponsorship money from donors before the day of the walk if they can. There will be over 900 taking part so you are advised to arrive really early in Market Square to register with the Committee, collect your walker number, and pay in any sponsorship money collected.

The walk will leave the Square on the East side, going through the Arcade, up High Street and down the Pollet, crossing at the traffic lights at the bottom of St Julian’s Avenue, then into Royal Plaza with a stop at No.1 – the offices of our Sponsors Ipes, then along the inside footpath to the traffic lights at Admiral Park, then on towards St Sampson’s then down the West Coast, returning to St Peter Port up the Rohais towards the finish in Market Square. This route is much safer than the previous route which was clockwise, but nonetheless walkers must be careful, make room for the elderly and those in wheelchairs and take special care at all road crossings. Marshals are in place at the key strategic crossings – so do not stray from the established route; maps will be provided in your walker-pack.

After the stop at Ipes’ offices in Royal Plaza, there are three checkpoints with water and facilities at Vale Douzaine Rooms, Port Soif and Les Beaucamps School.

ActionAid, Christian Aid, Save the Children, Oxfam and The Tumaini Fund all benefit from the funds raised by walkers. Each charity has its own projects earmarked towards which funds from the walk will be directed.

Entry forms will be available on this website for download or can be picked up from Beau Sejour or the Oxfam shop in St Peter Port.

Ipes have kindly sponsored the walk, for the 13th year – this means that every £1 raised will go directly to the benefiting charities.

Volunteers wanted for World Aid Walk

If you support the philosophy and purpose of the walk but do not wish to take part – we have a role for you!

We are always looking for assistance for this fun event – on the day of the walk we need marshals and assistants at the checkpoints. We also need lots of folk who are good at administration and are numerate to help between 8 and 9am in Market Square to process the walkers as they arrive to register, collect their numbers and hand over their collected sponsorship money.

If you wish to contribute to the organisation prior to the walk, or you have a special skill we could use……let us know.

And if you have any ideas that you feel can improve the walk…….get in touch!

Record numbers are the aim for this year’s World Aid Walk

The organisers of the World Aid Walk are hoping record numbers of walkers will take part in the event across the Bailiwick.

The 44th World Aid Walk will this year take place on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May and  will be extended across the Bailiwick with walks taking place in Guernsey, Herm and Sark.

The Bailiff, Richard Collas will, once again, start the Walk at 9am from Market Square. He says: “The World Aid Walk has become one of the popular events in the island that raises considerable sums of money for worthy causes whilst allowing islanders, and families in particular, to enjoy a comfortable walk around some of our beautiful coast.  Whoever you are and whether you are young or old, I encourage you to take part.  It is a fun and enjoyable occasion, whether or not you complete all of the walk.  I look forward to seeing you on the day.”

Chair of the World Aid Walk Bella Farrell says, “We are delighted to have the support of Richard Collas and thank him so much for agreeing to start the Walk. We are also delighted Herm and Sark are able to take part once again and we expect their walks to continue to flourish this year. We had good weather in 2013 and we hope that will encourage families to take this half-day to have a fun time and help to raise money for children in need in other less-well off parts of the world. All our administration costs are covered by sponsorship so every £1 raised goes to the work of the participating charities – Action Aid, Christian Aid, Save the Children, Oxfam and The Tumaini Fund. Let’s make this a bumper year like 2010″.

The 20km walk in Guernsey starts at 9am from Market Square and the shorter walks in Herm and Sark at 9.30am and 12noon respectively.

Entry forms are now available and can be collected from Ipes, Oxfam Shop, the island schools and Beau Sejour or can be downloaded this World Aid Walk website.
