The World Aid Walk Helps Haiti

News >>

Haiti has a population of 10 million, 80% of these people live on less than $2 a day.

On January 12, 2010 at 4.53pm an earthquake struck and now 3 million people are in desperate need of emergency aid.

By supporting the World Aid Walk you will be raising money for 4 charities which have a much needed presence there.

  1. Oxfam is flying in tones of water, sanitation, and health and shelter equipment from their emergency warehouse in Oxfordshire.

  2. Christian Aid is campaigning for all of Haiti’s $890million of international debt to be cancelled in full. So far 15,302 people have signed their on line petition.

  3. Save the Children have already got 353 staff on the ground and have reached 395,403 beneficiaries. They have 14 mobile teams in 45 camps and 18 child friendly spaces have been established providing activities for over 15,000 children.

  4. Action Aid is distributing over 200 tonnes of food and has set up regular feeding programmes reaching 14,000 people so far. Their next focus will be in providing shelter ahead of the rainy season in May, helping children get back to school and people back to work. Another important element of their work will be trauma healing for those who have lost loved ones and been left in shock by the earthquake.

Thank you for helping us help Haiti.

Isabel Farrell, Chair of Guernsey’s ‘World Aid Walk’ organising Committee.
